A Favicon is a little custom icon that appears next to a website's URL in the address bar of a web browser. They also show up in your bookmarked sites, on the tabs in tabbed browsers, and as the icon for Internet shortcuts on your desktop or other folders in Windows. The standard size for these icons is 16 pixels by 16 pixels.

To get started:

1. Create the ".ico" file and name it "favicon.ico".

   There are many ways to create these icons but two options would be

   • Favicon Generator
   • Export from Photoshop.
2. Hosting the Favicon depends on your Showit hosting choice:
   • Direct Host - (Showit is fully hosting your site) Drag and drop the "favicon.ico" file onto the Media Library in Showit. Once it has completed uploading it will be immediately start showing. Your web browser may need it's cache cleared.
   • Self Hosting - Upload your icon directly to the root of your website typically via FTP

You can test that your favicon is named and working correctly by typing the following address into your web browser where "example.com" is your domain name: http://example.com/favicon.ico

When you type that address and hit enter on the keyboard, if your browser shows the file or prompts you to download the ico file then it is uploaded correctly. If you get an error page then there was a problem with the naming of the file or the location of the upload for a Third Party Host.

iPhone and iPad Icon

The process is the same for adding an icon that would show up on an iPhone or iPad when someone bookmarks your site to their home screen but it requires a 57x57 png named apple-touch-icon.png. Use the same method as listed above with the Favicon to either add it to a Direct Host or Third Party Host. More info or other customizations are explained on the Apple Developer Site.
