Setup

SmugMug works great with Showit by allowing you to integrate images from SmugMug directly into a Photo Gallery. Showit supports the use of SmugMug unlisted galleries when you complete the SmugMug Authorization for Showit to use your SmugMug account. You can do this from the new SmugMug Setup... located in the Site toolbar menu.

Required SmugMug Gallery Settings

  • Feeds Enabled
Control Panel > Settings > Site-wide Features > Feeds must be enabled
File:Smugmugfeeds.jpg
  • No Passwords on Gallery
Your gallery cannot be password protected but it CAN be Unlisted
  • External Links Enabled
Gallery Settings > External Links must be Enabled

Next, if you want to have a photo visible using the selection for Keyword, Recent Photos, or Most Popular, the gallery that contains the photo must be both publicly listed and without a password. If you want to use a gallery that is unlisted, you must verify the settings as explained above.

Note: Password Protected Galleries are not supported as this would be a breakdown in the authentication method SmugMug provides.

Photos

Now in a Photo Gallery you will have the option to Use Images From: SmugMug and then choose Unlisted Gallery to display a list of all your galleries in SmugMug.

Keep in mind if you watermark your images in SmugMug, they will be watermarked on your site because Showit is accessing the publicly available images. In addition, if you have a password protected gallery, this will not be publicly visible on a Showit website so it is recommended that you use the unlisted method to keep images private but still be accessible to your site.

In addition, once you have authorized your SmugMug account, you will also have a new SmugMug tab in your Media Library and you can drag photos directly from SmugMug directly into your website or photo galleries. This means no more duplicate uploading of images if you are already using SmugMug, if you have it in SmugMug you can bring it into Showit!

Keep in mind that these photos will not be cached locally on your computer so you will need to be online to work with the SmugMug library or images that are being used from your SmugMug library. Images brought in from SmugMug are loaded online from SmugMug and are not copied into Showit, so if you make changes to your SmugMug account or cancel your account, it is possible those images will no longer be visible on your Showit website.

Image Sizes

In the Preferences you can set the default image size for large, medium, and thumbnail images brought in directly from SmugMug, ensuring you get maximum speed optimization for your site. Keep in mind, this setting is only used for future images added to a site and does not affect the current images already used in your site.

In addition, the Showit Media Library includes a SmugMug video player to play videos directly from your SmugMug account. SmugMug provides hosting of full HD video content that can be streamed directly into the SmugMug Video Player inside of Showit which even allows the user to choose between qualities for faster or slower connections. Video is available to the higher end SmugMug subscriptions and is currently limited to 10 minute videos.

WARNING: SmugMug has recently changed their URL format. Users must reformat the URL to the old URL format for it to work in our player. Take a look at the changes to find the old format at: http://news.smugmug.com/2012/01/10/hash-bang-how-we-beef-up-your-google-juice/

SmugMug Website Headers

You can also use the Share feature to create a header for SmugMug that is very customizable and allows you to have your website and shopping cart have the same look.

Start by creating a Header page in Showit that uses external links for the buttons. A more detailed tutorial and explanation of creating a header can be found in the Blogger Header Tutorial. Once you have created this page, copy the Embed Code (leave the No JavaScript in Code box unchecked).

Go to your SmugMug account and open the Control Panel, click on the Customize tab and then click on the Advanced Site-wide Customization link.

Scroll down to the Custom Header section and paste the embed code into the text area provided.

Save your changes and now your Showit page will be displayed in the header of your SmugMug account.

Known Issues

Occasionally when using SmugMug feeds there can be issues loading the SmugMug list that can cause a gallery not to show up. If you encounter errors loading a SmugMug gallery, we have found that some users have experienced a more reliable experience by authorizing your SmugMug account in Showit and then dragging the images from the SmugMug tab in the Media Library onto the My Photos list in the gallery. This loses the ability to control the images and display order from SmugMug but seems to provide a more consistent loading for a set of images.

Also, be sure that for the gallery you have External links set to Yes or sometimes the images won't load in different browsers.

There is also currently an issue loading a SmugMug image from a frame like the rounded border. Until this is resolved, it is recommended to only use images imported directly into Showit that are going to be placed inside a border.
